New technology available at Dukes Memorial Hospital will better the quality of care mothers-to-be will receive at the OB/GYN facility.
Diane Conner, nurse manager of the OB/GYN department, said the hospital has recently purchased an OB TraceVue system that is now operational.
The state-of-the-art OB data program enables monitoring of a mother's fetal monitor in another patient's room, at the nurse's station, or even in a physician's office or home via the Internet.
"It's great because the staff can be in one room and see what's going on in another," Conner explained. " ... It's something that's not available at all hospitals."
The manager said nurses and doctors at Dukes have undergone extensive training to learn to use the new system. Besides surveillance, OB TraceVue also documents and stores a complete care record of the mother and baby.
The new addition is just one of many on 5 West wing at Dukes. Officials there are also putting the finishing touches on a third birthing suite, complete with a new bed, fresh paint and flooring and state-of-the-art OB equipment.
"We've invested a lot of money recently into the OB department," Conner said.
Conner noted that Dukes has recently seen an increase in the number of labor and delivery patients cared for, partly due to bringing a new OB/GYN doctor on board, Dr. Jeffrey Penman. She said Dr. Curtis Orr and Dr. Catherine Reese are also seeing more OB patients.
