Employers in all regions of the United States and Indiana are facing an unprecedented loss of skilled and talented workers during the next 15 years due to potential baby boomer retirements. One in three workers will be 50 or older by 2010. The number of Americans aged 45-64 who will reach 65 over the next two decades increased by thirty-nine percent during this decade. Tecumseh Area Partnership, Inc., a non-profit workforce intermediary has studied and is now moving forward to address retirement effects in 14 counties of North Central and West Central Indiana.
The studies have been funded through a Department of Labor WIRED (Workforce Innovations in Regional Economic Development) grant. The counties include Benton, Carroll, Cass, Clinton, Fountain, Fulton, Howard, Miami, Montgomery, Tippecanoe, Tipton, Wabash, Warren and White. They have learned that while employers in the region are aware their workforce is aging; few have analyzed the problems or opportunities associated with an aging workforce.
In October, employers have an opportunity to attend a workshop focused on dealing directly with this phenomenon. Local economic development officials are collaborating with Tecumseh Area Partnership, Inc. to present Managing Your Mature Workforce…Discovering the Three Rs. workshops. The four-hour interactive session developed by Tecumseh Area Partnership, Inc., addresses human resource functions for managing a mature workforce.
The content includes a range of information for consideration in establishing practical solutions, processes and systems to meet workforce demographic changes. Attendees will also receive a training manual with practical information, best practices and reference material. Employers, human resource professionals and others interested in this topic are encouraged to attend a morning or afternoon session at any one of the seven different locations in the 14 county region where the sessions will be conducted.
Area workshops will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 8 in Peru, Thursday, Oct. 9 in Monticello, Thursday, Oct. 16 in Lafayette, Wednesday, Oct. 22 in Kokomo, Thursday, Oct. 23 in Frankfort, Tuesday, Oct 28 in Williamsport, and Wednesday Oct. 29 in Logansport.
