Dukes Memorial Hospital announced it would be cutting 28 positions
throughout the Peru health care facility on Wednesday.
In a press release it was stated the hospital has recently undertaken a "restructuring of operations" in selected areas of the hospital.
"Hospitals review staffing levels on a daily basis and adjust them to meet the needs of patient volumes as part of fiscal responsibilities," it
states. "Mindful of Dukes' mission to patient care, the reorganization did not eliminate any bedside care positions. While the hospital remains financially sound, it is imperative to staff in relation to patient volumes in order to better cope with the ever-present struggle of rising costs and reimbursement challenges.
"The leadership team is working closely with job placement organizations to offer assistance in finding new jobs for those employees who are
affected."
Dukes CEO Deb Close said Wednesday most of the positions eliminated were management positions. She said employees were told in person about the cuts
Wednesday, and reiterated that the hospital is working to assist the affected workers in finding other work.
"These are never easy decisions to make, but we are confident the staffing changes will not impact patient care," Close said in the release.
"The hospital will continue to deliver the same high quality, compassionate care that our patients, their families and the community have come to expect
from us."
After the cuts, Dukes will employ approximately 300 workers, according
to Close.
